However, the origin story is contested. That same year, Chicago Bears defensive tackle Dan Hampton claimed he was the first to start the tradition — saying he dunked coach Mike Ditka after the Bears clinched the NFC Central playoff spot a month later. So while the Giants may have been first, the Bears weren’t far behind.
What we do know for sure is that the Gatorade shower gained national attention during the Giants’ 1986 season. They drenched Parcells after every one of their 17 wins, and fans loved it. The tradition became iconic — and fittingly, that season ended with a Super Bowl victory in one of the most memorable campaigns in NFL history.
