Chelsea in Final, but Critics Cite Weak Path

Despite Chelsea having already clinched their spot in the final, soccer experts touted the PSG vs Real Madrid as more worthy of a final. Boy, were they wrong. PSG made Real Madrid look like a Ligue 1 relegation candidate, triggering comments from Chelsea fans saying they’d rather have lost to Fluminense than have to face this monster of a team in the final.

A favorable path has pushed Chelsea to the cup decider thanks to some big upsets in the knockout rounds. Inter lost to Fluminense while Man City were overtaken by Al Hilal on penalties. That led to Chelsea facing Benfica, Palmeiras and Fluminense on their way to the final. In fact, PSG will be the first big-5 European side Chelsea has faced this tournament.

The West London-based club also benefited from one of the easier groups in the competition. Saddled by LAFC, Flamengo and ES Tunis, Chelsea finished 2nd in Group D. The Brazilian side managed to win the group after defeating Chelsea 3-1 in Philadelphia. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca promptly complained about an overloaded schedule for European teams, but was shut down by South American reporters who cited even busier schedules for Brazilian teams.

Former Brighton striker Joao Pedro made his arrival to Chelsea known with a brace in the semifinal. Resting on vacation back in his native Brazil, Joao Pedro monitored his club status heavily and stayed in shape with a personal trainer in case a Club World Cup team called his name. The proactive work paid dividends immediately, breaking the hearts of his boyhood club Fluminense in the process.

Now the former Watford star has a chance to win his first-ever trophy. A victory for Chelsea would mark their second trophy in just six weeks, having won the UEFA Conference League back in May.

Can PSG Win an “International Quintuple?”

PSG’s offense has not just been on fire: they are dismantling elite-level opposition in the most important competitions. They tore apart Real Madrid’s fraudulent defense for four goals in the semifinal. The performance was reminiscent of their 5-0 drubbing of Inter in the UEFA Champions League final.

But it is not just their offense that is raising eyebrows. PSG has conceded just one goal this summer in a shocking 1-0 defeat to Botafogo. That totals to just one goal allowed in their last 8 matches across all competitions. It’s no surprise then that pundits around the world are wondering aloud if this 2025 PSG team is one of the best sides ever. The European treble winners are knocking on the door of a fifth trophy and could so in dominant fashion.

I could argue against PSG’s candidacy amongst the all-time great clubs, but it would detract from the marvel of their current achievements. Instead, I will highlight how young PSG is. PSG’s starting XI averages 25 years of age, a far cry from Inter’s average of 30. This is a testament to PSG’s potential as a dominant club in European soccer for many years to come.

Chelsea vs PSG Prediction and Free Betting Pick

Betting on overs in PSG matches has been an absolute moneymaker, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon, even in a final. While I typically favor betting unders in high-stakes games as teams play more conservative, Enrique’s style seems to buck all trends. I advocated for the over in PSG’s first Club World Cup match against Atletico Madrid, which easily hit.

Chelsea will likely struggle to contain PSG, but they have some firepower in Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson to match. This should set up to be an end-to-end affair with plenty of goalmouth action.

There is some interesting discrepancy in the market for this game that’s important to note. BetOnline is listing over 3 goals at a line of (-105), while Bovada is offering (-122). That’s a huge difference, which indicates one sportsbook is likely wrong. I’ll take a stab at the over at a discounted price of (-105) on BetOnline and hope to get some good closing line value heading into the weekend.
