Can Fluminense Repeat 2023 Club World Cup Final Run?
In 2023, Fluminense advanced to the final of the Club World Cup in a modified version of the tiered bracket-style tournament. Tricolor entered the competition in the semifinals as winners of the Copa Libertadores and faced Egypt-based Al-Ahly. After winning 2-0, Fluminense were thoroughly beaten in the final 4-0 by Man City. It was their closest chance to winning an international trophy since winning the 1952 Copa Rio.
The Club World Cup has undergone changes to its format since then, now expanding to a much-larger knockout tournament. The 32 teams now meet in eight groups of four for a round-robin group stage schedule before advancing to knockout rounds. This expansion also marks the first time the FIFA CWC will operate quadrennially, with the next edition taking place in 2029.
These changes bring added weight and significance to what has been a controversial competition. Evaluating the importance of the international tournament is difficult, as it has traditionally been rather exclusive. In the early years of the Club World Cup, Brazilian sides dominated. At a time when the Brasileirao Serie A ranked amongst European leagues as the best in the world, that should come to no surprise to soccer historians.
Indeed, three different Brazilian clubs won the first three editions of the Club World Cup. In 2000, Corinthians hoisted the trophy in Fluminense’s home of Maracana, defeating rivals Vasco da Gama. A long-awaited return in 2005 saw Sao Paulo upset Liverpool in Japan, followed by Internacional winning in the final over Barcelona in the same country. More South American success followed: Boca Juniors finished as runners-up in 2007 and LDU Quito in 2008.
Dortmund Look Like a Brand-New Team Under Kovac
Dortmund were in utter freefall in February when Nuri Sahin was sacked as manager of the club. The Yellow Wall was very displeased with an 11th-placed position in the Bundesliga and made their discontent heard. Niko Kovac was put in charge of leading a comeback fight for European qualification. The Croatian passed the test in flying colors, bringing Dortmund all the way up to 4th on the table and clinching a return to the Champions League.
Kovac also almost commandeered an upset over Barcelona in the UCL in the quarterfinals. As 2023 runners-up, the result was ultimately disappointing, but more praise should have been given. Dortmund were struggling for points against bottom-tier sides like Holstein Kiel prior to pushing Barcelona to the brink. An early summer international tournament provides Dortmund with the perfect second-chance opportunity to earn a trophy in 2025.
Kovac and Co. will be confident in their chances at the Club World Cup given their draw. Their group is one of the weakest of the 8, as the two featured teams are joined by Ulsan of South Korea and Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa.
Dortmund have been active in the transfer market this summer, signing Jude Bellingham’s younger brother Jobe from Sunderland. BVB also inquired about the availability of Chelsea’s Jamie Gittens. Bellingham should feature for Dortmund for the first time in this Club World Cup tournament.
Club World Cup Betting Prediction: Fluminense vs Dortmund
It’s difficult to predict Club World Cup matches with the same degree of confidence I do in other domestic leagues. An international competition pits sides that have never met in neutral territory, all with changing lineups and coaching staff. But one thing that is consistent between both Fluminense and Dortmund has been scoring.
Fluminense is one of the highest-scoring sides in the Brasileirao, and also one of the most high-scoring away from home. Meanwhile, only Bayern and Leverkusen (by one goal) bested Dortmund in scoring, while Dortmund conceded 51 through 34 games.
I believe these sides should combine to create an end-to-end fixture reminiscent of typical Bundesliga matches. Fluminense have the ability to score on the break while Dortmund are pegged to win it. Therefore, I think there is some value on the current total of 2.75. The line has taken some movement, opening at plus-money and now moving to near (-115).
Go with over 2.75 goals at BetUS at (-112).
